Few industries have such a far reach as information technology (IT). No matter what sector you work in, you’re likely affected by computers, software, hardware, and other features of information technology.
It’s important to stay on top of IT trends as they develop, to make sure your company adapts to any new technical developments.
What IT trends will define 2023?
We’ve identified a few of the trends most likely to impact the IT world in the new year. Check those out below.
Virtual work and play
If companies are the only ones pushing a particular technology that the general public has no interest in, does that qualify as a trend? Services like Meta’s Metaverse, and virtual shopping options developed by Walmart, are trying to find out. Whatever these digital worlds end up becoming, one thing is certain: they’re nowhere close to giving up. The hype around living in a digital world will continue into 2023, with every small development and change earning global headlines. This is one trend to keep your eye on because there is a lot of money (and we mean a lot) waiting for the person who can figure out how to get everyday people to use these services on a regular basis.
Artificial Intelligence (including AI art)
You might have seen the recent news regarding the controversy of AI designs winning art competitions, and being banned from well-known art institutions and websites. This is just the latest in the fast-moving world of artificial intelligence. Don’t be surprised when companies begin to integrate AI-powered technology into every aspect of their work. Considering the break-neck pace of AI development, and the lack of government regulation or laws, nobody can predict where it will stop.
The great (or scary) thing about AI is that you don’t need to know how to create your own AI structures to find success. Many of the AIs being developed are open-source, meaning you just need to know how to use it, adapt it and tell it what to do. Lucky for you, many schools teach you to do just that. Those who know how to bend AI to their will are quickly becoming valuable members of their organizations, and powerful forces in their industry.
Blockchain confusion
If you have spent any time online at all over the last few years, you’re probably sick of hearing about blockchain technology and anything related to it. We understand. It’s a lot to take in, and remains an industry ripe for fraud and deception. Yet it shows no sign of slowing down.
Following the crash of many digital currencies, the rise and fall of NFT investments and a slew of federal investigations, blockchain technology seems to be a hammer without a nail to an outside observer. We can’t forget that the blockchain is a valuable innovation with far-reaching applications, and many companies will continue to use it to improve everything from banking to social media.
3D printing
Printing plastic components in the comfort of your own home has been commonplace for a few years now. Printers have become cheaper, and the technology more precise and customizable. The full potential of 3D printing is just now beginning to mature. Companies in healthcare, food, military and more have begun to use 3D printing to cut out middlemen and produce the parts they need cheaper and faster. Human organs, edible meat, even full-sized homes are all being created with 3D printers.
There is growth in not only finding new things that can be printed in 3D but also how to make existing machines more accurate and efficient.
Algorithm mania
Algorithms are everywhere. Everything has an algorithm and everybody loves talking about them. Whether you love them or hate them, or know nothing about them (but pretend you do), algorithms are here to stay. Why? Because they work. From a technical perspective, anything performing simple, real-time calculations can be called an algorithm, but we’re talking about the systems that analyze user data in real time and serve them relevant content for the purpose of influencing their online and purchasing behavior.
As more IT professionals who understand algorithms enter the industry, and as companies refine (or develop) their own technologies, algorithms will become even more intelligent and effective. Competing algorithm technology can potentially create an algorithm marketplace or an algorithm hierarchy within existing social media and content providers.
The future is bright for algorithms.
